Seedhi baat: a razai survives the off-season if you do three things — dry it completely in the sun, seal it airtight, and keep it off the floor. Seelan, dust and bugs all reach a razai through open air. Take the air away and you take away all three routes at once. That's the whole mechanism; there's nothing clever about it.
Below is what actually goes wrong in a Pakistani almari between March and October, and the routine that prevents it.
Pehle: razai ko poori tarah sukhayein
Every storage problem below starts here, so this step is not skippable.
Air it in direct sun for a few hours, turning it halfway so both sides get the light. If it needs washing, wash it and then dry it fully — longer than you think. A razai is thick, and the surface can feel dry while the filling is still holding moisture.
Why it matters this much: an airtight bag works in both directions. It keeps outside seelan out, and it keeps inside moisture in. Seal a razai that was "almost dry" in March and you've built a small sealed damp chamber and left it in a warm cupboard until October. Give it the extra day of sun. It costs nothing.
Seelan — the real problem, and what actually stops it
From July the humidity climbs, and a closed wooden almari holds that damp air with almost no movement. Cotton and fibre filling are absorbent, so a razai sitting in it slowly takes on moisture — and that is what becomes the stale, musty smell and the grey patches you find in autumn.
The mechanism that helps is simple: an airtight seal is a physical barrier. A sealed vacuum bag with an intact zip and a one-way valve doesn't exchange air with the almari, so humid monsoon air never reaches the razai. That is the entire claim, and it's an honest one — it's a barrier, not a treatment. It doesn't dry anything out and it doesn't remove moisture that's already in the filling. Whatever you seal in is what you get back in October.
Two things that also help and cost nothing:
- Keep the bags off the floor. Floors are the dampest surface in the room, and a bottom shelf against an outside wall is the next worst. Store sealed slabs on a middle or top shelf.
- Open the almari for an hour on dry days. Moving air in the cupboard helps everything stored in it, sealed or not.
Dust — the one you notice immediately
Dust is the easy win. In most Pakistani homes, especially near a road, a razai left folded on an open shelf for seven months comes out grey along the top fold and needs a wash before anyone will sleep under it — an afternoon of work in the exact week you wanted the razai on the bed.
A sealed bag ends that completely. Nothing gets in, so a razai that went in clean comes out clean and goes straight on the bed. This is the least dramatic benefit and it's the one people mention first when they message us in November.
Keeray — honestly, what a sealed bag does and doesn't do
What a sealed bag does: it is a closed physical barrier. Insects that would otherwise wander into an open shelf and settle in stored cloth cannot get through an intact sealed bag. Keeping the razai physically separated from the rest of the almari's contents for the whole off-season is genuinely useful, and it's the reason people who've had a bad experience once tend to seal everything after that.
What it does not do: it is not a pesticide and it does not kill anything. We make no such claim. If eggs or insects are already in the cloth when you seal it, sealing does not remove them — you've simply enclosed them. That's why the routine starts with sun and a wash: sunlight and airing before storage are the part that deals with what's already there, and the seal is the part that stops anything new getting in.
So: clean it, dry it in the sun, then seal it. In that order. A sealed bag around a dirty razai is just a tidier problem.
Razai ko bag mein kaise rakhein
- Fill — fold the razai to roughly the shape of the bag and lay it in flat. One razai per Jumbo bag; don't force two.
- Zip — close the double zip and slide the clip along it, then run your fingers down the whole zip line. A single fold of cloth caught in the zip is the most common reason a bag puffs up again by next week.
- Pump — hand pump on the one-way valve. No electricity, no vacuum cleaner. A Jumbo razai takes a little longer than a small bag — keep pumping until the bag stops shrinking.
- Store — flat on a middle or top shelf, off the floor, away from an outside wall.
The Jumbo (80 × 100 cm) is the razai and double-blanket size. A Large (60 × 80 cm) takes blankets and jackets. If you're not sure yours will fit, measure it folded and check the size guide.
Kitni jagah bachegi
A razai is mostly air held in the filling, which is why it's the best case for a vacuum bag of anything in the house. In a Jumbo bag a razai takes about half the space it takes loose on a shelf. Thinner and denser bedding compresses less — a cotton chadar barely changes. How much space you save depends on the item, and soft things compress the most. We'd rather you saw it yourself than took a bigger number from us.
Kya expect karein — the honest limits
- Creases: a compressed razai comes out with fold lines. Air it in the sun for a few hours in October and it recovers its loft.
- A little air comes back: over months, some air returns. That's normal for every vacuum bag, not a fault. If a bag re-inflates within days, it's the zip line — open it, clear the cloth, re-pump.
- Not for everything: a razai is ideal. Leather, fur and memory foam are not — leather needs to breathe and creases permanently, and memory foam's cell structure can be damaged by long compression. The full list is in what to store in vacuum bags — and what not to.
- Nothing sharp: a pin or a sharp buckle nicks the bag, and a nicked bag refills with air.
